Working between graffiti, geometry and contemporary art
My work started in the early eighties, writing and painting in public space. Murals are still central to my practice. The structure of the city, its walls and its rhythm guide how I create large-scale work.
Graffiti and murals
In paintings and installations I focus on clear shapes, spatial tension and the language of architecture. The geometric direction from my graffiti roots continues here and moves into a more sculptural fine-art context.
Studio and museum work
Alongside this I curate exhibitions and collaborative projects. It brings artists, histories and ideas together and connects street culture with contemporary art.
Curation
Selected milestones
Active from 1983 in Amsterdam and later New York, part of the first wave of European graffiti writers and documented alongside Lady Pink, Seen and Dondi.
Early graffiti movement
Featured in significant cultural documents on graffiti history, including Bomb It in 2007 and ARTE’s The Rise of Graffiti Writing in 2018.
Documentaries and media
Created murals and large-scale commissions including the DUO building in Groningen in 2013, the Miro Mural Festival in Barcelona in 2022, OurDomain Amsterdam Southeast in 2021 and HK Walls in Hong Kong in 2024.
Public projects
Curated Graffiti. New York meets the Dam at the Amsterdam Museum in 2015, connecting the New York graffiti movement with its development in the Netherlands.
Curation
Supported the protection of the 1986 Keith Haring mural in Amsterdam through the project Save Our Haring, developed in 2017 in collaboration with the Keith Haring Foundation and Vroom and Varossieau.
Cultural preservation
Work shown at the Groninger Museum in 2015, at STRAAT Museum Amsterdam from 2020 onwards and at the Urban Art Biennale at Weltkulturerbe Völklinger Hütte in 2022.
Museum exhibitions
Presented the solo show Beyond Measure at the Museum of Graffiti in Miami in 2024, alongside the exhibition Something to Hold On To in Amsterdam in 2024.
