About the documentary
Always wanted to know how the New York way of graffiti writing made its way to Europe and further developed there? The online series The Rise of Graffiti Writing explores this history. Curated by Lars from Copenhagen and directed by René Kaestner, this ten-episode series gives insight into the development of graffiti writing in New York City and Europe. With interviews with many of the important artists from the 1980s and 1990s in NYC and Europe, and previously unpublished film footage, this documentary can be regarded as an important retrospective on the scene.

Because of my role as guest curator of the exhibition Graffiti. New York meets The Dam at the Amsterdam Museum (2015), I was invited for consultation about the influence of New York City graffiti on Amsterdam. Together with the film crew, hidden early tags by Quik and Shoe are visited, and the role of gallery owner Yaki Kornblit in bringing many New York artists to Amsterdam for exhibitions at his gallery is explained. Important museums such as Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Groninger Museum and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen acquired works from these exhibitions.
Yaki Kornblit and his former gallery partner Vincent Vlasblom are introduced, who brings one of Rammellzee’s drawings. The rest of the story is told by the artists involved, including Boris Tellegen (Delta), Niels Shoe Meulman, Bando and Mode 2.
